Navigating My Educational Journey and Commitment to Positive Change

My educational journey has been a dynamic adventure filled with self-discovery and a deep passion for art and technology. Raised in Silicon Valley, where my parents worked for renowned tech companies such as HP and Cisco, I had the privilege of early exposure to computers, sparking my curiosity and setting me on a path of independent exploration.

As early as 1st grade, I utilized Ami Pro and Lotus Office to create colorful charts, complete school projects, and write papers. My parents encouraged self-reliance and self-learning, making me proficient in computer technology. By the time I entered 7th grade and participated in my first formal computer class, I was already well-versed in the intricacies of computer systems. This class reaffirmed my technical prowess and provided an environment where I could freely express myself.

While my journey in technology was largely self-guided, my experience with the fine arts offered a more structured path. Throughout my elementary, middle, and high school years, I had the opportunity to explore various forms of artistic expression, from drawing and painting to sculpting and ceramics. The guidance of Mrs. Fredrickson, a dedicated art teacher with a degree in fine arts from SJSU, further nurtured my passion for art. Her insightful lessons on renowned artists like Van Gogh and Matisse left an indelible mark on my artistic journey.

In high school, I continued cultivating my interest in art, particularly art history. Under the tutelage of Mrs. McGinnis, a remarkable teacher and artist, my fascination with art history blossomed. Her expertise and teaching style ignited a lasting commitment to the field of art, solidifying my determination to explore its depths.

My pursuit of web design and the technical aspects of art remained largely self-driven until I enrolled at the Academy of Art in 2008, where I successfully completed my Associate’s degree in Web Design and New Media. Although I enjoyed web and graphic design, I realized that my true calling lay elsewhere.

Throughout my educational journey, I faced considerable personal challenges, including chronic depression and debilitating anxiety. These obstacles hindered my ability to concentrate and excel academically. Regrettably, I did not receive the support I needed from my family, and some educators dismissed my potential. This adversity led me to decide to leave high school during my junior year.

Despite these challenges, I persevered through community college, although social anxiety remained a significant obstacle. Only through therapy and smaller class settings at the Academy of Art did I discover an environment where I could thrive. This period of self-discovery allowed me to understand and effectively manage my depression and anxiety, ultimately leading to my personal growth.

My journey through education and my experiences as a parent have underscored the need for change in our public school system. Often, there is a lack of understanding and support for students with mental and learning disorders, and educational institutions sometimes prioritize conformity over individuality. I firmly believe that every child possesses unique potential and should be provided with tailored educational opportunities. My aspiration is to contribute to the transformation of public education, ensuring that all students have access to outlets for self-expression and receive personalized attention.

My educational journey has been characterized by both personal triumphs and challenges, ultimately shaping my unwavering commitment to art and education. I seek opportunities to leverage my passion for creativity, technology, and individualized learning to drive positive change within educational settings. My goal is to help unlock students’ potential and create inclusive, nurturing environments that foster their growth and development.
